Në vitin 1877 filologu i shquar francez Louis Benloeë shkruajti një vepër që tronditi rangjet shkencore e historike. Ky libër i titulluar “Greqia përpara grekëve”. Benloeë flet për kombin shqiptar. Aref thotë: “...pellazgo-shqipja shtrihej në një pjesë të madhe të Europës: nga Atlantiku (Baskët) deri në Detin e Zi (Kaukazianët, Armenët) dhe nga dy brigjet e Danubit (madje edhe më në Veri meqenëse gjenden fjalë Lituaneze dhe kuptime të shpjegueshme nëpërmjet shqipes) deri në Detin Egje (Kreto-Mikenët). Ndërsa Hirt dhe Shrader midis autorëve të tjerë modernë kanë nxjerrë hipotezën e ekzistencës të një gjuhe të vetme “europiane” të folur nga Atlantiku deri në Kaukaz dhe në Azinë e Vogël. Më e rëndësishmja është paraqitja e tezës së Prof. Dr. Mathieu Arefi me titull: “Kërkime mbi pellazgët, si origjinë e civilizimit grek”. Kjo tezë u përshëndet nga juria për seriozitetin dhe rrugën shkencore të ndjekur nga autori, mbas konsultimit, juria vendosi dhënien e titullit: “Doktor në shkencat e historisë së antikitetit (Greqia antike) të Universitetit Paris – Sorbone.(http://stopinj.blogspot.com).
Por sundimi turk i bashkuar me armikun shekullor Patrikanën zhvilluan një luftë për jetë a vdekje me shqiptarët për të ruajtur ndjenjën e kombësisë.

Ai i dha Patrik Genadit gradën e pashait dhe nxori një dekret që e njihte atë dhe pasuesit e tij si krerë shpirtërorë dhe civilë të të gjitha bashkësive ortodokse. Juridiksioni përfshinte grekët, shqiptarët, bullgarët, rumunët, dhe sllavët. Ky dekret perandorak e shndërroi Kishën Ortodokse të Lindjes në një shtet brenda shtetit. Për të arritur këtë qëllim, fanarjotët shpallën gjuhën greke të plotfuqishme. Alfabetin grek, shkollat greke, kishat greke u bënë tipar zotëruese të jetës intelektuale të popujve të krishterë të Ballkanit, deri në shek. XX. Despotizmi shpirtëror i Patrikanës ishte më i keq se tirania politike e turqve.
Ata që guxonin të ngrinin krye, braktiseshin, mallkoheshin, ç`pagëzoheshin
dhe paditeshin tek autoritetet turke si kryengritës e rebelë kundër qeverisë, e cila i ekzekutonte, i burgoste ose syrgjynoste.
Autoritetet turke bashkëpunonin haptas me peshkopët grekë për shtypjen e shpirtit kombëtar të shqiptarëve. Dimë që Perandoria Osmane nuk njihte kombësi, por vetëm komunitete fetare. Rrjedhimisht shqiptarët ishin ndarë në tre komunitete fetare, duke mos i njohur si njësi kombëtare më vete. Kështu shkollat lejoheshin në gjuhën turko-osmane, greke dhe latino-italiane. Pas vitit 1821, qeveria e Athinës përpiqej të kultivonte nëpërmjet gjuhës, fesë, dhe historisë së Greqisë, ndërgjegjen kombëtare greke, veçanërisht në rininë ortodokse shqiptare.
Rilindësit tanë iu kundërvunë panhenizimit dhe pansllavizimit.
Kisha në Greqi ka në kushtetutën e këtij vendi, këtë: “çdo ortodoksë është grek dhe çdo grek është ortodoksë”. Bytyçi (“Shqiptarët...” f. 202).
Për këtë të gjithë shqiptarët ortodoksë në Greqi i quan grekë, kështu që greku vë fenë mbi kombin, kjo është fatkeqësi për të, që gënjen vetveten e tij.
Greqia ka një komb artificial duke përdorur greqishten si gjuhë, fenë ortodokse dhe ideologjinë heleniste si nacionalizëm.
Një nacionalizëm i tej skajshëm nga një komb që nuk është komb është i pa shembullt në histori. (E. Kocaqi, f. 199).
Kordinjano, e ka quajtur besimin e popullit tonë një “besim natyral primitiv”. Ja se si shprehet ai: “Shqiptari në praktikën jetësore dhe në ndërgjegjen intime të veprimtarisë së tij është thellësisht fetar, por besimi i tij është një besim natyral primitiv. Ideja në Zotin prinë çdo gjë e mbi çdo gjë; ngjarjet e mëdha dhe të vogla, rastet e begatisë e të fatkeqësisë, jeta dhe vdekja, të gjitha i referohen Zotit si një shkak universal dhe Suprem i çdo gjëje”. Lordi Hobhaus shkruan: “Vetëm shqiptarët kanë ndjenjën e kombësisë; asnjë prej popujve të tjerë të mbretërisë osmane nuk ndien gjë tjetër përveç fesë”. (Anton Çefa, “Letër e B. Profeti Muhamed dhe pasuesit e tij, kalifët, e shkrinë në një individ të vetëm pushtetin fetar politik. Ata e ndanë botën në dy kategori: Daryl Islam (fusha e Islamit) dhe Daryl Harb (fusha e betejës). Shpata
